online store How To Identify And Repair Your Rest Deficits For Better Business Success — EXACTLY WHERE YOU WANT TO BE

The success of pretty much every company that I have had the pleasure of working with comes down to the success of the founder and business leaders. The success of these individuals can propel a company into something special, but if these leaders don’t take care of themselves, then it can lead to an imploded mess of an organization. So, why don’t more entrepreneurs, business owners and leaders take better care of themselves?

We recently looked at the eight effective ways entrepreneurs and business owners can work smarter, not harder—so we know it’s important to take time to recharge. Rest is typically associated with sleep, but we all know the feeling of getting a full eight hours and waking up feeling exhausted all the same. Sleep doesn’t always make us feel rested, especially if you’re dealing with stress or burnout.

We need different types of rest beyond sleep to feel recharged, to be more productive and to propel our businesses to the next level. When it’s all grouped together into sleep, we miss out on other types of rest as we focus on getting our eight hours.

According to Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith, MD, author of Sacred Rest: Recover Your Life, Renew Your Energy, Restore Your Sanity and TedX speaker, there are seven types of rest every person needs:

• Physical

• Mental

• Emotional

• Social

• Sensory

• Creative

• Spiritual

Let’s take a look at how to find out what we’re missing and what we can do to correct it for the sake of ourselves, our teams and our businesses.

Beyond sleep, it’s important to identify the areas of rest that may be missing. If you’re drained and tired—creatively, emotionally, socially—you can’t bring your best work forward. Furthermore, if you’re getting plenty of one type of rest but missing another, you aren’t relieving yourself of the exhaustion.

When we go and go and go, we’re producing a lot, but is it good? Is it our best work? Or are we just producing? Grinding out work isn’t necessarily productive if it’s not the highest quality and can quickly lead to burnout.

Reflecting to find rest deficits and prioritizing the right type of rest is the key to moving past burnout and becoming truly productive.

How To Identify The Rest You Need

Identifying the rest you need begins with recognizing areas where you use the most energy. If you’re in a creative field and spend a lot of time coming up with new ideas and looking for inspiration and innovation, you likely use a lot of creative energy and may need creative rest.

If your work is physical or you’re training for athletic competitions, you probably need physical rest to recharge. High-stress work typically involves a lot of sensory stimulation and mental and emotional drain, so those may be the types of rest you need.

Everyone needs every type of rest on a regular basis, but prioritizing the areas where you expend the most energy and experience the most drain give you guidance as to what types of rest you should prioritize.

How To Get The Rest You Need

It’s one thing to identify the rest you’re missing and an entirely different thing to actually get it. Here are some tips:

• Address the most severe rest deficits first.

• Schedule your rest and develop restorative habits, such as taking nature walks or setting aside time away from your screens.

• Develop rest habits for your workday, such as taking mindfulness breaks or stepping out of the office during your scheduled breaks.

We all need more than sleep and food to fuel our day. Finding ways to address your rest deficits and developing better restorative habits can help you relax, recharge and become more productive. And when we are productive, we can lead a team to success.
