online store Am I Coachable? — EXACTLY WHERE YOU WANT TO BE

We've looked at whether you should hire a coach, and we've shown why and how a business coach can be an important asset for any organization. However, a coach can only be successful if the executive hiring them is coachable. So, whether or not you are coachable is an important question to ask yourself.

I truly believe that all people can be coached if the timing is right. There are a variety of circumstances — personal, professional and external — that can influence your current ability to be coached. What may hinder your coachability right now could be completely different in a week, a month or even a year.

If you determine that you aren't coachable at this point in time, don't fret. As things in your life and at your organization change, there is bound to be some time in the future that your ability to be coached will improve. It's about timing, and more so, about being honest with yourself.

Here are some questions you will need to ask yourself to decide whether or not you should bring a business coach into your organization at the current time.

Am I too proud or embarrassed to ask for help?

Business leaders need to have confidence, but sometimes this is mistaken for pride. When you let pride dictate your actions and decisions, it can be challenging to work with others and truly collaborate on ideas that can improve the company. If you are currently in a state where you don't want to ask others for help, you might have difficulty adjusting to the services of a business coach.

Can I fit a business coach into my schedule?

Business owners are notoriously busy. They have to maintain relationships with vendors and customers, monitor the performance of their employees and ensure that the company is meeting or exceeding expectations when it comes to profitability and market position. This can make certain tasks, such as meeting with a business coach, seem like an unnecessary expenditure. If, however, you are willing to work on your scheduling skills and make personal improvement a priority, you just may benefit from your time with a coach.

Am I open to honest, constructive criticism?

As with many questions that leaders must ask themselves, this one often goes back to pride. You must be ready to accept that you don't have all the answers and that some of your solutions may not be perfect, or, even worse, that they might be downright awful. Very few people have become great successes without multiple failures under their belt, and you have to be willing to accept that criticisms of your ideas and actions are perfectly valid. If you are unwilling to do so at the current time, you might want to consider delaying the hiring of a coach.

Can I really do everything on my own?

Some people are great independent workers who can efficiently and effectively finish their tasks. But when it comes to the overall goals for your business, are you really capable of reaching them without any help? Your employees may be the foundation of your business, but they still look to you for guidance. So, who can you look to when times get tough? If you're open to allowing another person to help you, you might be ready to hire a business coach.

As I mentioned, everybody can be coached, but it requires their cooperation. You have to take an honest look at your current situation and determine if you are willing to listen to a coach's criticisms and ideas. In the end, if you are truly committed to bettering yourself and your company, you will find that you are very coachable.
